“She would look so much better if she lost some weight,” said someone to their friend the other day. And I was appalled. Why does weighing less, being thinner, result in better looks? Why does society force people to believe that the only way to be considered pretty is if you have a 24” waist and looks equal to a model? How closed-minded and insensitive are we to compartmentalize good looks? How have our standards of beauty become so high that the only people that actually fit into these standards are people with abs, high cheekbones and a thigh gap?

I don’t think people understand the severity of the situation; how much these standards mess with people’s lives. How some people try so hard to reach this close to unattainable level of beauty that they ruin themselves, their bodies, their lives, their mental state, in the process; which causes illnesses in the likes of anorexia and bulimia; which are caused by people trying so hard to be accepted by others. Shouldn’t a person be judged by their personality, regardless of whether they are a size 0 or a size 18? Are we really that shallow to focus on people’s physical appearance, and judge them without knowing who they are?

Evaluation of the inner self, not the outer self, is what’s important. Focus on personality, and not on their body type. Don’t tear people down, help them rise up. Accept people regardless of their body type. Learn to look at the inside, ignore the outside. Be accepting, stop being judgemental, be open to all people. After all, they are all humans, just like you.
